From the midst of pre-history to a bunker deep beneath ...。北京胡同里住着陈家、林家、潘家，经历了改革开放四十年，他们的生活发生了翻天覆地的变化。陈家是普通人家，儿子陈焕是恢复高考后第一批大学生，后来成了著名的经济学者，女儿陈青和女婿何大海，经历了下海下岗和再就业。小女儿陈小鸥则是新时代的女性。林家是高干家庭，儿子林一达从大三线调回，带回农村媳妇群英，先是在政府机关工作，后去经商，女儿林平平则考上大学，后来出国深造。潘家的儿子亮子是待业青年，母亲潘桃一心指望儿子，却无奈亮子不争气。一年又一年，陈焕成就了事业，却丢了爱情。林平平实现了出国梦，却活的十分坎坷。陈青经历了下岗，再就业找回了自我；何大海生意起伏，最终也有了自己的归宿。林一达则在经商的路上迷失，离婚再娶。群英则由保姆般的小媳妇，历练成为女强人。。
