Hugo Llor, a 12-year-old boy who spends most of his time on the streets. His day is also spent in the shipyards and his dream is to become a shipbuilding craftsman, although his fate is uncertain. Hugo's life is not easy, he is a very lonely boy and his mother is forced to move away from him, but he has the support and protection of a respected old man: Arnau Estanyol.。故事发生在1926年一个位于阿尔多瓦的偏僻小村庄里，年仅16岁的少女穆谢特（桑德里娜·伯奈尔 Sandrine Bonnaire 饰）不仅腹中怀有孩子，还犯下了杀死情人的罪行。背负深重罪孽的她找到了村里的神父多尼桑（杰拉尔·德帕迪约 Gérard Depardieu 饰），希望能够通过忏悔来获得上帝的原谅。 多尼桑是一位非常虔诚的信徒，早已经决定将自己的全部献给主，他几十年如一日的做着祷告，甚至用藤条抽打脊背，为的只是驱赶盘踞在心中的魔鬼，对于多尼桑来说，潜伏在他身边的魔鬼实在是太多了，它们时时刻刻都在考验着自己的信仰。不幸的是，在多尼桑的教诲下，穆谢特最终还是选择了自杀，而随着她的死，多尼桑的精神也开始逐渐崩溃。。
